Australia's hideously cruel treatment of newborn dairy calves

There is no stopping Australia's hideously cruel treatment of newborn dairy calves- and it's about to get worse!!!!!!

by Stephanie Dyer on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 7:02am
To murder any animal is unspeakable but to murder newborn animals is beyond contempt......and to make the process as horrific as possible is just criminal..... Australia murders around 700 000 unwanted newborn dairy calves each year.....they are seen as wastage and treated as such....

'Bobby Calves' are the hidden, silent victims of the Dairy Industry. Within hours of being born (around 12 hours of age) they are taken from their mothers, then at the tender age of 4-5 days old, they are trucked to slaughter...if that isn't sick enough it's about to get worse...

The term ‘bobby calves’ means newborn calves that are less than two weeks old and not with their mothers.

In Australia over 700 000 bobby calves are sent to slaughter because they are simply unwanted, they are seen as nothing more than a by product of the dairy industry.  Dairy farmers see these newborn calves as a threat due to the fact they wan't to drink what farmers make their money from, and that is of course their mums Milk.... Milk which is meant for baby cows, not for humans...

When trucked from farms to saleyards, and of course eventually to their final destination being murderhouses, they are treated in the most horrific ways. These little calves that can barely stand on their little wobbly legs, are dragged, kicked, thrown and belted around, yes this is how most unwanted dairy calves are treated.

Products from processed calves include young veal for human consumption, valuable hides for leather and byproducts for the pharmaceutical industry.

"Just when we thought the treatment of these newborn calves couldn't get any worse, it's about to"

TO TAKE THESE BABIES FROM THEIR MOTHERS IS SICK ENOUGH BUT TO MURDER THEM IS SIMPLY UNSPEAKABLE, AND TO MAKE THE PROCESS SO UNBELIEVABLY HORRIFIC IS SIMPLY INDEFENSIBLE ON ALL LEVELS...

The Australian Dairy Industry, in conjunction with the University of Melbourne and the Department of Primary Industries, has decided that murdering these babies is not enough, no they want the process to be as dreaful as possible for newborn calves.  Industry members have put forward a submission which will see already abused calves denied feed for up to 30hrs. During this 30hrs these babies will be carted around on trailers and trucks and end up at murderhouses. The Australian Dairy Industry has already stated that newborn calves deteriorate after being denied feed for up to 24hrs, however the industry now plans on ensuring these babies are not fed for up to 30hrs, all the while knowing these calves will of course suffer greatly. The Australian Dairy Industry and the Australian government is showing yet again the utter contempt it has for these innocent little victims, victims which are simply seen and treated as rubbish in Australia.

BOBBY CALVES DENIED FEED FOR UP TO 30HRS

Dear Ministers and other relevant parties

I have recently learnt that Australian newborn dairy calves (bobby calves) may soon be treated with even more contempt than they are now, and I am of course horrified by this as I imagine any decent human being will be.

It has been brought to my attention that a submission asking that bobby calves be denied feed for up to 30hrs, may be accepted in the very near future. I believe this to be outrageously unethical and deplorable.

One has to ask why the Australian Dairy Industry and the Australian government would want to inflict further abuse and suffering, upon already abused 4-5 day old calves?

Surely removing these newborn calves from their mothers at approximately 12hrs old is sinister enough, not to mention carting them off to saleyards and of course slaughterhouses at the tender, vulnerable age of 4-5 days old.  But to deny these newborn calves feed for up to 30hrs during the process, is simply unconscionable.

Dairy Australia's own research found that the welfare of bobby calves begins to deteriorate from 24hrs off feed, and that is if conditions are ideal.

The University of Melbourne’s (Australia) so called ‘scientific research’ which was carried out in 2009/2010 to ‘prove’ that newborn calves do ‘not’ deteriorate when denied feed for up to 30hrs, is far from acceptable. In fact it could be said that these ‘tests’ were carried out using healthy bobby calves, not calves that would normally be trucked for slaughter. Also the tests were conducted in reasonable weather conditions, not conditions which bobby calves would be forced to endure when trucked from farm, saleyards and then to abattoirs.

The proposal to deny newborn calves feed for up to 30hrs is based purely on economic benefit, and has nothing to do with animal welfare.  Australia claims to have the ‘best animal welfare practices in the world’, however this disturbing proposal clearly shows that this is simply untrue.

I ask that this submission be rejected.

Yours sincerely

Milk Comes From Grieving Mothers

by Javier Moreno on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 10:24pm

Every Year, 9 Million Mothers Are Forced to Endure The Worst Loss.

All females used for milk production are torn from their babies shortly after birth. Some try to fight off the attackers, some try to shield their babies with their own bodies, some chase frantically after the transport, some cry pitifully, some withdraw in silent despair. Some go trustingly with their keepers only to return to an empty stall.

They all beg for their babies in language that requires no translation: They bellow, they cry, they moan. Many continue to call for their babies for days and nights on end. Some stop eating and drinking. They search feverishly. Many refuse to give up and will return to the empty spot again and again. Some withdraw in silent grief. They all remember to their last breath the face, the scent, the voice, the gait of every baby they carried for nine months, soundered to, birthed with difficulty, bathed, loved, and never got to know, nurture, protect, and watch live. Their baby girls will be raised to replace their own “spent” mothers, their baby boys will be killed for veal.

After repeated cycles of forced impregnations, painful births, relentless milkings, and crushing bereavements, their spirit gives, their bodies wither, their milk dries up. At the age when, in nature, a female cow would barely enter adulthood, the life of a dairy cow is over. When her milk “production” declines, she and her other “spent” herd mates are trucked off to slaughter. Some are pregnant. All are still lactating. As they are shoved towards their death, they drip milk onto the killing floor.

All Dairy operations, whether conventional or organic, exist solely by doing to millions of defenseless females the worst thing anyone can do to a mother. Dairy consumers support and perpetuate this intentional cruelty with their purchases.

You can stop it. Go vegan now.

Dairy Cows~

One Voice

So you ask...
What's so cruel about Dairy?

Even though most people have never visited a slaughterhouse,........ the panic, dread, and terror that await innocent creatures, and the gruesome sights and sounds which emanate from these hidden "houses of death" are not at all difficult to imagine.
What many people do not realize is that these same horrors are the fate of every factory-raised dairy cow

Milk's Got Plenty of....Cruelty

A dairy cow's life is a continuous cycle of impragna-tion, birth, and milking to provide one thing only -- a constant supply of milk for human consumption and profit. She will be milked for 10 months out of the year, including seven months of each of her consecutive nine-month pregnancies. Two to three times a day, seven days a week, she will be attached to an electric milking machine, like just another cog in a factory. Then she will be returned to her cramped, narrow, concrete stall to do nothing but await the next milking.

Within hours after giving birth, the cow's calf will be forcibly taken from her. Male calves will be sold for pet food, killed at just a few days old to make "bob veal", or raised for beef.

Others will be auctioned to producers of "formula-fed veal".
On veal farms, male calves are confined in tiny crates to restrict their movement in order to keep their muscles tender. They are fed an iron-deficient diet which causes severe anima but which keeps their flesh white, making it more valuable when they are sold for meat. Subjected to total sensory deprivation and stripped of any measure of joy, 20% of veal calves will die before even reaching the typical slaughtering age of 16 weeks.
So think about it. In every glass of milk,
is a slice of VEAL

The female calves will be sequestered in tiny stalls in preparation for their enslavement to the dairy industry. When they are old enough to be artificially inseminated, they will begin the drudgery of a dairy cow. Their mother will be promptly put back into intensive milk production, where she will remain at risk for numerous stress related illnesses, infections, and diseases, many of which can be fatal.

A dairy cow will survive a mere four years of this cruel, hollow life, whereas under natural conditions, she might live up to 25 years. At the end of her days, when she can no longer keep up the demanded level of milk production, drained and exhausted, she will be packed onto a crowded truck for transport to her final destination -- the slaughterhouse.........
After a life of slavery and servitude, her retirement gift will be to end up like her fellow "food animals" -- on somebody's plate.
So be aware...if you continue to drink milk while unwittingly clinging to the myth that it is benignly begotten, you should be outraged to know that 40% of America's hamburger is made from "spent" dairy cows!

New life enters upon the earth
but greed fouls the precious birth
He takes his first baby breath
unknowing of his destined death

Mother protects him all she can
but she's powerless against man
As soon as he was able to stand
he met the harsh human hand

To the dairy farm he is waste
mother's milk he'll never taste
All of her milk we humans take
he's denied mother for dairy's sake

He arrives at the farm for veal
from innocent birth to someone's meal
In his lonely, barren crate he cries
hopelessness and terror in his eyes

His would-be loving mother
has frantically lost another
Her relentless bellows easily heard
and her anguish clear without word

Dairy kills ~ that's the deal
but the solution is to boycott veal?
Break the chain at its start
don't have dairy ~ have a heart
